The Joyful Mysteries

The five joyful mysteries of the Holy Rosary, each with its scripture, fruit, and a short meditation to guide your prayer.

First Mystery

The Annunciation

Luke 1:26–38

The Annunciation
"The angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.' Mary said, 'Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.'"

The angel Gabriel greets Mary and announces she will bear the Son of God. In her quiet yes, salvation begins to enter the world.

Fruit: Humility

Where is God asking a quiet 'yes' of you today? Sit with anything you have been afraid to surrender, and offer it in Mary's spirit of trust.

Second Mystery

The Visitation

Luke 1:39–56

The Visitation
"When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out: 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.'"

Mary hurries to visit Elizabeth, who greets her with joy. Two mothers meet, and the unborn John leaps at the presence of Christ.

Fruit: Love of Neighbor

Who in your life needs your presence this week? Ask for the grace to carry Christ to them, as Mary did to Elizabeth.

Third Mystery

The Nativity

Luke 2:1–20

The Nativity
"She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn."

Jesus is born in a humble stable in Bethlehem. Heaven bends low to be held by ordinary hands.

Fruit: Poverty of Spirit

What comforts do you cling to that keep your heart crowded? Make a little room, quietly, for Christ to be born there again.

Fourth Mystery

The Presentation

Luke 2:22–38

The Presentation
"Simeon took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: 'Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation.'"

Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the temple to offer him to God. Simeon recognizes the child as the light of the world.

Fruit: Obedience

What is God asking you to offer back to him — a plan, a person, a hope? Place it, unclenched, into his hands.

Fifth Mystery

The Finding in the Temple

Luke 2:41–52

The Finding in the Temple
"After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. He said, 'Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?'"

After three days of searching, Mary and Joseph find Jesus among the teachers. He reminds them that he must be about his Father's work.

Fruit: Joy in Finding Christ

Where have you been searching for Jesus lately, and not finding him? Ask for eyes to see where he has quietly been waiting for you.
