The Sorrowful Mysteries

The five sorrowful mysteries of the Holy Rosary, each with its scripture, fruit, and a short meditation to guide your prayer.

First Mystery

The Agony in the Garden

Matthew 26:36–46

The Agony in the Garden
"He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.'"

Jesus prays alone in Gethsemane as sorrow overwhelms him. He surrenders his will to the Father, choosing love over fear.

Fruit: Sorrow for Sin

Sit for a moment with Jesus in the garden. Name the fear you have been avoiding, and let him carry it with you.

Second Mystery

The Scourging at the Pillar

John 19:1

The Scourging at the Pillar
"Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged."

Jesus is bound and beaten without protest. He carries in silence the weight of every wound the world has ever known.

Fruit: Purity

Offer the smallest hidden suffering of your day — a headache, a slight, a disappointment — in union with the wounds of Christ.

Third Mystery

The Crowning with Thorns

Matthew 27:27–31

The Crowning with Thorns
"Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!'"

Soldiers mock Jesus as a king and press thorns into his head. He receives their cruelty with the dignity of true kingship.

Fruit: Moral Courage

Where are you tempted to trade your integrity for approval? Ask Christ the King for the courage to stand quietly in the truth.

Fourth Mystery

The Carrying of the Cross

John 19:17

The Carrying of the Cross
"So they took Jesus, and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha."

Jesus carries his cross through the streets toward Calvary. Every step is offered for those who will one day carry their own.

Fruit: Patience

What cross are you carrying right now? Walk one step of it with Jesus, and let him walk one step of his with you.

Fifth Mystery

The Crucifixion

Luke 23:33–46

The Crucifixion
"Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit'; and when he had said this he breathed his last."

Jesus is nailed to the cross and gives his life for the world. In his last breath he entrusts everything to the Father.

Fruit: Perseverance and Salvation

Stand at the foot of the cross. Bring to Jesus the person or situation most in need of mercy, and leave them there with him.
