The Luminous Mysteries

The five luminous mysteries of the Holy Rosary, each with its scripture, fruit, and a short meditation to guide your prayer.

First Mystery

The Baptism in the Jordan

Matthew 3:16–17

The Baptism in the Jordan
"After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.'"

Jesus steps into the river and the heavens open above him. The Father's voice names him Beloved before his ministry begins.

Fruit: Openness to the Holy Spirit

Reflect on your identity as a beloved child of God. Offer up any feelings of inadequacy or spiritual dryness during this decade.

Second Mystery

The Wedding at Cana

John 2:1–11

The Wedding at Cana
"His mother said to the servers, 'Do whatever he tells you.' Jesus said, 'Fill the jars with water.' … The headwaiter tasted the water, which had become wine."

At his mother's quiet request, Jesus turns water into wine. His first sign is a gift given to keep a celebration alive.

Fruit: Fidelity and Trust in Mary

Where has your life run out of wine — of joy, of energy, of love? Bring that emptiness to Mary and let her present it to her Son.

Third Mystery

The Proclamation of the Kingdom

Mark 1:14–15

The Proclamation of the Kingdom
"Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: 'This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.'"

Jesus walks the countryside announcing that the kingdom of God is near. He calls the tired and the searching to turn and begin again.

Fruit: Desire for Conversion

Where is Jesus inviting you to turn — even a little — and begin again? Choose one small step of repentance for today.

Fourth Mystery

The Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1–8

The Transfiguration
"He was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.'"

On the mountain Jesus is revealed in dazzling light. For a moment his friends see the glory that lives beneath his ordinary face.

Fruit: Desire for Holiness

Ask Jesus for one small glimpse of his glory in the ordinary hours ahead — in a face, a task, or a moment of silence.

Fifth Mystery

The Institution of the Eucharist

Luke 22:14–20

The Institution of the Eucharist
"Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.'"

At the last supper Jesus takes bread and wine and gives himself. He leaves a meal that will feed the world until he returns.

Fruit: Love of the Eucharist

Make a spiritual communion now: ask Jesus to come into your heart as truly as he comes at Mass, and rest with him for a moment.
